South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson has initiated an investigation into Roblox Corporation, issuing a Civil Investigative Demand (CID) under the South Carolina Unfair Trade Practices Act (SCUTPA). The SCUTPA prohibits unfair competition, deceptive practices, and unlawful acts within the state.

“Roblox markets itself as the #1 gaming site for kids and teens,” Attorney General Wilson stated. “But ensuring the safety of our children online is a top priority for me, and if Roblox is deceiving parents on their safety protocols, they deserve to be held accountable.”

Recent legal actions in other states have raised concerns that Roblox may contain sexualized content and lacks sufficient age-verification or parental consent mechanisms. The CID from Wilson’s office seeks details about how many minors in South Carolina use Roblox, the company’s content moderation procedures, and whether advertisers are permitted to target users who are minors. Additionally, information has been requested regarding possible breaches of the South Carolina Uniform Money Services Act.

“As a dad, I want to be certain that gaming platforms or websites my children can access are safe and free from sexualized material,” Wilson added. “And as Attorney General, I want to ensure the safety of our state’s children on the internet, while making sure out-of-state corporations follow our laws.”
