Antonio Salazar Munos, a 23-year-old resident of Columbus, Ohio, has been sentenced to two and a half years in federal prison for assaulting his dating partner by suffocation during a cruise. The incident took place in April 2023 when Munos, the victim, and their family traveled from Ohio to Charleston, South Carolina to embark on a three-day cruise aboard the Carnival Sunshine.

Investigators found that Munos physically assaulted the victim at multiple locations on the ship before they returned to their cabin. There, he sexually and physically assaulted the victim. Afterward, the victim contacted the ship’s security team, which investigated and reported the matter to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

United States District Judge Richard M. Gergel sentenced Munos to 30 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release. In the federal system, parole is not available.

The case was investigated by the FBI Columbia Field Office and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Whit Sowards.
