South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson announced the arrest of Demetrias Antonio Roberts, a 41-year-old resident of Irmo, on charges related to the exploitation of a vulnerable adult. The case was investigated by the Vulnerable Adults and Medicaid Provider Fraud (VAMPF) unit within the Attorney General’s Office.
According to investigators, between July 18 and November 13, 2025, Roberts exploited a nursing home resident for personal financial gain. While acting as the victim’s power of attorney, Roberts allegedly accessed the individual’s bank account and made unauthorized withdrawals and purchases totaling about $14,862.90. Authorities state that these transactions benefited only Roberts and not the victim.
The alleged victim is legally recognized as a vulnerable adult under South Carolina law and was residing in an Irmo nursing home during this period.
Roberts was booked into Lexington County Detention Center on February 19, 2026. The Attorney General’s Office will prosecute the case.
Attorney General Wilson stated: “All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they are proven guilty in a court of law.”
The VAMPF unit has authority over cases involving Medicaid provider fraud as well as abuse or exploitation of individuals living in assisted living facilities or nursing homes. It receives most of its funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services—75 percent through a federal grant totaling $2,964,287 for fiscal year 2026—with South Carolina providing the remaining 25 percent at $988,096.
The South Carolina Attorney General serves as the state’s chief legal advocate and enforcer by handling prosecutions and regulatory matters across all regions of South Carolina (official website).
