A federal grand jury in Columbia has indicted Tyrel Mack, 29, of Florence, on seven counts of physically assaulting children at a child development and youth center located on Shaw Air Force Base near Sumter. The indictment, presented by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, alleges that Mack assaulted four different minor victims—each under five years old—on seven separate occasions.

According to the indictment, Mack was working at the daycare center in November 2025 in a classroom for children aged three to five. He is accused of kicking, hitting, striking, and intentionally stepping on the children.

If convicted, Mack faces up to one year in prison for each count.

The investigation was conducted by the U.S. Airforce Security Forces Squadron. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Scott Matthews and Elle E. Klein are handling the prosecution.

“All charges in the indictment are merely accusations and defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law,” stated officials from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
