Attorney General Alan Wilson, along with 35 other attorneys general from across the country, has urged Meta to strengthen its enforcement of advertising policies on Instagram and Facebook. The coalition is specifically calling for action against AI-generated weight loss ads that may mislead consumers.
“As we celebrate the holiday season and begin a new year, weight loss will be a topic for many around our state and country,” Attorney General Wilson said. “It’s imperative that these companies abstain from unlabeled AI-generated content and Meta enforce their existing policies on health and wellness ads.”
The popularity of GLP-1 weight loss drugs has increased in recent years, leading to a rise in advertisements targeting consumers directly through Meta’s platforms. Many of these ads promote non-FDA approved or compounded drugs, which can pose risks to users. Current advertising guidelines require that information about medical effectiveness and affordability be provided, restrict targeting to adults, and prohibit promoting unrealistic body images.
The attorneys general are requesting that Meta not only uphold its current standards but also implement further measures to address concerns related to AI-generated content in pharmaceutical advertising.
Attorney General Wilson was joined by counterparts from states including Connecticut, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, California, New York, and others in sending the letter to Meta.
As South Carolina’s chief legal advocate and regulator, Alan Wilson leads efforts in consumer protection and law enforcement throughout the state.
