Attorney General Alan Wilson has requested documents from several nonprofit organizations in South Carolina to ensure they are not supporting terrorist groups. Letters were sent to The Hope Foundation of Palestine, Islamic Relief USA, Carolina Peace Resource Center, Islamic Circle of North America Relief, Council on American-Islamic Relations, and Heal Palestine. These organizations are registered as nonprofits with the South Carolina Secretary of State and operate within the state.
“Since October 7, 2023, we have seen a disturbing amount of support for Hamas and affiliated terrorist organizations,” Attorney General Wilson said. “The attack against Israel at the Nova festival was the deadliest day for the Jewish people since the Holocaust.”
The letters request information about each organization’s board members, meeting agendas, financial activities, contributions, solicitation policies, events, and media activity. According to authorities, all these groups have reportedly been associated with terror-linked entities.
South Carolina law gives the Attorney General authority to investigate nonprofit organizations operating in the state if there is reason to believe they may be violating their charter or any laws.
“We have been steadfast in our support of Israel as it defends itself,” Wilson said. “Rooting out terrorism is a matter of great urgency, and any support of terrorism within our borders must be stopped.”
Responses received by the Attorney General’s Office will not be made public due to state law. Any additional legal actions would appear in future court filings if they occur. The office clarified that sending these letters does not represent formal findings or conclusions regarding links between these nonprofits and foreign entities.
