South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson has addressed the Charleston County Library Board with a letter reminding them of their responsibilities under state law regarding the availability of sexually explicit material in children’s sections.
“As both Attorney General and as a parent, I was deeply troubled by the reports of sexually explicit and age-inappropriate material in the children’s book section of these libraries,” Attorney General Wilson said. “There is no responsibility more important than protecting our children.”
Wilson’s letter refers to Proviso 27.1 of the FY 2025-2026 General Appropriations Act. This provision requires county libraries to certify to the State Library that they have policies ensuring books or materials appealing to the prurient interest of minors under seventeen are not available in children’s, youth, or teen sections without explicit parental consent.
The letter aims to confirm that this matter has been addressed within the Charleston County Library System and to ensure compliance with state law.
As South Carolina’s chief legal advocate, Wilson oversees prosecutions and regulatory matters statewide, including consumer protection and collaboration with law enforcement agencies (https://www.scag.gov/about-the-office/news/). The Attorney General’s office also provides support for crime victims and works on issues affecting community safety across South Carolina (https://www.scag.gov/about-the-office/news/).
