Attorney General Alan Wilson has assigned Melody Brown, a senior attorney from the Capital & Collateral Litigation Section, to the Fifth Circuit Solicitor’s Office. Brown will conduct a comprehensive review of the case involving the May 3, 2025, murder of Logan Federico.

Wilson stated, “Melody Brown is one of the most seasoned attorneys in our office, with extensive experience in cases warranting the death penalty. She will be reviewing the details of this case to ensure that every step forward is handled with the utmost precision and the highest standards of justice.”

The Capital & Collateral Litigation Section handles jurisdiction in death penalty cases after direct appeal for post-conviction relief proceedings in circuit court, appeals in both state and federal courts, and any subsequent actions challenging convictions or sentences.

In addition to assigning Brown, Wilson’s office will lead an audit of defendant Alexander Devante Dickey’s criminal record and prior legal proceedings. This includes investigating why Dickey was not incarcerated at the time of Federico’s murder and what circumstances allowed this situation.

The Attorney General’s Office sent a letter to Solicitor Gipson recommending strong consideration for filing a notice of intent to seek the death penalty. Solicitor Gipson replied that his office cannot make a decision about pursuing the death penalty yet as it continues its review of evidence in the case.

Senior Assistant Deputy Attorney General Melody Brown will now participate in this ongoing review.

Wilson added, “We owe it to Logan Federico’s family, and to every family in South Carolina, to make sure justice is served.”
